Ulverston is one of the last market towns in England with a working local economy and an independent character. Now this is under threat from new superstore developments. Help us to stop it happening!

Robinsons Brewery wants to demolish the historic buildings on the old Hartleys brewery site and build a giant superstore in its place. This development could wreck the local economy and change the town’s character forever. At the same time, Sainsbury’s are ‘exploring’ the possibility of building an out-of-town store in Ulverston.

Ulverston’s economy and character are threatened by two potential superstores. If you want to stop this happening, please visit this page to find out what you can do.

The developers claim that these developments will benefit Ulverston. In reality, they would:

  • Threaten the existence of over half of the town’s independent retailers
  • Destroy good quality local jobs as local retailers and suppliers close
  • Degrade the character, look and independence of our market town
  • Divert money from the local economy into the tills of a big chain store which will not support local suppliers
  • Increase the volume of traffic, including delivery lorries, in a residential area
